Grichuk and Rodgers Spring Training with MLB Clubs
In 2008 the Lamar Consolidated Mustangs went 29-7 the best record in school history and finished their season as Regional Quarter-Finalists. The next season the team went 23-5 the highest single season win percentage in school history making it to the 3rd round of playoffs. These teams were led by some outstanding pitching and hitting, most notably Randal Grichuk now the center fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball and Brady Rodgers who is with the Houston Astros Spring Training trying to make his first MLB roster.
During his time in high school at Lamar Randal showed himself to be a class athlete recognized across the country as one of the top hitting talents, which is why the Anaheim Angels selected him in the 1st round of the MLB draft, #24 overall, in 2009. Prior to his selection Randal had received many awards during his 4 years at Lamar Consolidated. As a freshman he was 2nd team all district, up to 1st team as a sophomore, and then during the long playoff and district championship run people really took notice. In 2008 as a junior Grichuk received 1st team All-District, 1st Team All-State, Fort Bend Co-MVP, and All-Houston MVP. His success continued as his senior season saw him receive District MVP, 1st Team All-State, and be named to numerous 1st Team ALL-AMERICAN lists. Grichuk has 150 major league games now under his belt as made huge waves with his power (20 HR, .827 OPS) and spectacular plays in the outfield.
Brady Rodgers chose to go the college rout instead of going straight to the minor leagues out of high school and Arizona State is sure glad that he did. During High School at Lamar Brady was a FR HM Pitcher, Sophomor 1st team All-District and Fort Bend Pitcher of the Year. His Junior season 2008, he was the district Pitcher of the Year, 2nd Team All-State and Fort Bend Pitcher of the ear again. As a senior, Rodgers was once again 1st Team All-District, HM All-State, and for the 3rd Straight year Fort Bend Pitcher of the Year.
All of this success got him drafted in the 39th round and recruited by Arizona State where he attended for 3 seasons earning 3 All-Conference selections, FR All-American, and as a Junior in 2012 2nd Team All-American. His career ERA of 2.39 ranking 2nd best all time at ASU. With his selection that season in the 3rd round of the MLB draft by the Houston Astros he started his way to the majors, making it all the way to AAA last season.
Both Randal and Brady played on the US National Teams representing their country as well as their school with pride!
To show how proud we are of these two outstanding men, their hard work, their achievements, and their continuing future success, the Lamar Baseball facility will be decorated with some of their High School uniforms. This is a great opportunity for this school to remember how great the Lamar Baseball History is and to have visible examples of what hard work can do and the places it can take you. Thank you Randal and Brady for your continued support of Lamar Consolidated High School and best of luck this season!
