Lamar Defeats FBCA in 3rd Place Game

The Lamar Consolidated Boys Basketball team went 3-1 at the 2015 Leroy Miksch Memorial Tournament in Needville Texas over the weekend.  Lamar started the tournament off against Bay City in a rematch from earlier in the week’s non district win vs the Black Cats.  Lamar got off to a hot start scoring 45 in the first half and won the 1st round match with Bay City 81-45.  The mustangs had 7 players with more than 8 points in the game.

In the second round on Friday Night, the Mustangs faced off against Caney Creek, who defeated Kempner in round one.  The Lamar defense came out to play big time holding Caney Creek to only 15 points in the first half on their way to a 25-15 halftime lead.  Caney Creek fought back with a big 3rd quarter and it came down to clutch free throws by Sophomore Byron Brown to seal the win 50-43.  Winning this quarterfinal, matched the Mustangs up against Columbia who had defeated Brazoswood and St. Johns.

In the semi-final 3rd Round against Columbia the game was tight, but messy.  Both teams struggled with making shots and the game was mired with tons of turnovers throughout both halves.  With 1:23 left in the game it was tied 50-50 between the two squads, Columbia managed the last five points for a 55-50 win.  The Mustangs were sent to the 3rd Place game and Columbia would go on to Defeat Needville HS in final and win the Championship of the Tournament.

In the 3rd Place match-up against Fort Bend Christian Academy the Mustangs got back to their winning ways, though it was not easy.  In a very physical and mistake prone match-up the game came down to the wire with the Mustangs holding on for a 56-53 victory and taking home the third place trophy for the tournament.

Lamar is now 6-3 on the season, the next game is Tuesday night at Brazosport and then the Mustangs go to Corpus Christi for the Pride of Texas Tournament.
